WHAT SIZE SHOULD MY RUG BE?
Choosing the right area rug can definitely be a challenging process. We understand the pain of not knowing what size of a rug fits. Well, not to worry fam, we’ve got you! That is why we’re here to help you find the perfect rug to highlight your exquisite decor for a welcoming space.
IN THE LIVING ROOM:
As a general rule of thumb, your living room shape should dictate the rug size and orientation to make space look larger and feel connected. Here are three main layouts:
NO LEGS ON:
This layout uses a small rug that keeps all the furniture off of it. This is perfect for smaller spaces where you can get away with having the rug just in front of the sofa – 6” to 10” in front of the sofa is a typical distance but again, it is your preference. Remember this will accentuate your floors – so we want them to shine at their maximum potential as well!
FRONT LEGS ON:
This layout uses a medium-sized rug that keeps only the front legs of the furniture on the rug. This versatile option works especially well when one edge of the furniture grouping is against a wall. In addition, the space can be anchored better when the rug goes under the sofa and comes out on the sides. This really works well with L-shaped sectional sofas – being a larger furniture piece, you need to make sure the rug is big enough to ground it.
ALL LEGS ON:
This layout requires the largest rug and of course, the largest space among the three layouts. This creates a unified look and a sense of grandeur in your living room with an area rug large enough to accommodate all of your furniture. Best choice for anchoring a living room within an open-concept space or for any furniture grouping that floats (has no furniture against a wall).
IN THE BEDROOM:
RUNNERS ON THE SIDE:
This layout uses a runner rug on either side of the bed, giving you a soft underfoot feel when getting in and out of bed. Perfect for smaller bedrooms especially if two sides of the bed sits against a wall.
FOOT OF BED:
This layout allows you to get the style and panache of an area rug by placing it just at the foot of the bed. Frame your bed with this popular option, which doesn’t quite extend up to your nightstands, but still allows for 18″ – 24″ of room on the sides and past the foot of the bed.
ALL FURNITURE ON:
As usual, this layout requires the largest rug as well as space among the three layouts. This is because it extends beyond the bed to its accompanying furniture, like nightstands or a bench – but does not include bedroom pieces along other walls, like dressers. We recommend having the rug extend at least 18″ – 24″ past the edge of your bed. Perfect for living like a king (or queen)!
